Writing : Meditation : Activism
River trained as a social worker, psychotherapist and carpenter, and has taught creative writing in therapeutic, community and school settings since 1998. She is a former Derbyshire Poet Laureate, has been extensively involved in community arts projects, and has published poetry, short stories and non-fiction.
A deepening interest in the connections between psychology, embodiment, creativity, activism and spiritual practice led her to an insight meditation retreat in
2000. Since then she has been a regular retreatant at Gaia House, Devon practising mainly in the insight meditation tradition, and also inspired by the Thai Forest tradition, Thich Nhat Hanh, Natalie Goldberg, Joanna Macy, secular mindfulness, and by radical seekers of all and no faiths.
She is co-founder of Sheffield Insight Meditation, a Community Dharma Leader authorised by Gaia House Teacher Council, and a student on the Bodhi College
2018-2021 Teacher Training Programme. A long-time peace, feminist and community activist, she co-founded ‘Out Aloud’ Sheffield’s LGBT Choir, and has volunteered in the refugee sector since 2003, most recently as an ally for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers.
River teaches with iBme UK (inward bound mindfulness education) offering residential retreats for young people 15-19 years old.
River currently offers meditation courses, daylong retreats, mentoring, and assists senior teachers on residential meditation retreats.
She is also available for creative writing workshops and mentoring.
